The
miracle that is Italy consists of artistic and historical riches
encompassed in a gorgeous country of splendid cities interlaced
with the scenery of majestic mountains and roaming hills. The idyllic
climate makes Italy a perfect destination for the art lover, the
sun worshipper, the sporty lover or the gourmand. There are Roman
ruins, Renaissance art, tiny medieval hill towns, or ski in the
Alps, or swim in the Adriatic or emerald coast, or shop in the big
cities al the attractions are there for you.
Car
rental Italy is one of the best ways to sightsee this country,
as many attractions are fairly spread out and the train system is
costly. To explore the ruins at Pompeii or to gaze at the architecture
of the Roman Colosseum at your free time, you'll find that a rental
car in Italy is the optimal mode of transport.
You'll
be prepared to tour at your own speed with your Car
rental Italy. Tour the sparkling marble city of Assisi at Mount
Subasio, keep your date with David in Florence, and check out romantic
Venice. Don't miss the well-preserved medieval city of San Gimignano
near Tuscany, or Cinque Terre, the lovely meeting place of five
towns lodged into a mountainside to enjoy the best food and drink
that Italy has to offer
Italy
has an excellent system of roads and highways that is one of the
most wide-ranging in Europe, comprising nearly 6400km of express
highways and 288,000km of secondary roads. The country’s famous
express way also known as autostrade run the length and breadth
of the peninsula. These toll roads are supported by an excellent
network of secondary roads, divided into different categories of
national highways , provincial roads and municipal roads. This can
create jamming in some of the northern areas and in cities. But
in southern parts of the country the roads are less crowded.
Car
rental Italy can be an enormously worthwhile experience, but
without the proper planning and information in can also be a total
nightmare. If you do want to rent a car, it is very convenient way
to move from one city to the next or to experience the fantastic
coastlines or country sides that Italy has to offer. Driving in
most Italian cities is not worthwhile as it is not easy to find
your way around and even if you do, parking is usually very limited.
The way out is to locate a hotel that offers parking, park the car,
and leave it until you are off to next city. This is particularly
in Rome and Naples where cars are being driven on roads not meant
for modern vehicles. Basically there is no traffic control or system
in lanes or right of way and you are not expected to stop at stop
signs only a slowing down will usually do.
If
you are an daring type of person and don't mind the disorder, driving
in Italy, and particularly in Rome and Naples can be fun. If you
want to see countryside only, you should not have many problems.
Even though the official speed limit on the Italian toll road is
about 80 mph many cars go considerably over 100. Just make sure
to keep in mind that the left lane is the passing lane so try not
to speed in that left. It is advisable that you plan the course
of travel carefully before getting on Italian highways as the signage
is mediocre and if you miss your turnoff, it may be miles before
you can turn around. If you must keep your belongings in the car
trunk keep them there before you reach your destination. Thieves
target foreigners and know that they often keep valuables in the
trunk. Many of the major car rental companies have offices to give
Car rental Italy but to get better
rates it will be better to book your car prior to your departure.
You can make plans to pick up your car at a major airport if this
is convenient for you which is not a bad idea bearing in mind that
a taxi ride from the major airports to the city costs about $75.
Quite a few rental cars in Italy do not have manual transmission
you have to ask for it if you want it.
Requirements
To
rent a car, the age limit is 18 years which can differ on the basis
of car category and must have held license for 1 year. Seatbelts
are mandatory and children under 12 must wear an age-appropriate
restraint. The blood-alcohol limit for driving is .08.
Rules
of the Road
Traffic
moves on the right and the middle path of a three lane road is for
passing. If you are stopped for a traffic infringement, police are
authorized to collect fines on the spot.
Gas

stations work 7am to 12:30pm and from 3:30pm to 7pm. Most stations
are closed on Sundays. You can find 24 hour stations all along the
highway.

autostrade is Italy’s toll super highway and toll cards can be bought
at banks or at Automoblie Club offices.
