New York City Introduction:

It is interesting to know about New York, which is the largest city in the United States and the core of the most populous urbanized area. It is the cultural, financial, corporate and communications capital of the United States. New York is also an important political , educational, manufacturing, commercial and transportation center. The establishment of head quarters of the United Nations in New York in the 1940s symbolized the citys world stature.

Until this day, New York retains its status and its gesture is growing year after year.

Early history:

Founded by the Dutch as New Amsterdam in about 1626, New York was captured by the English and given its present name in 1664. New York was eclipsed in size and power by Boston and Philadelphia. However, after the completion of Erie Canal in 1825, it acquired its prominence. New Yorks merchants controlled much of the nations European trade before Civil War and New Yorks financiers and bankers guided the nations post war industrialization. The expansion of New Yorks boundaries in 1898 gave political expression to its greatness of metropolis and it is a pioneering achievement.

Location:

New York is located at the south eastern tip of New York State in North America and at the place where Hudson River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This city lies at the place where southeastern New York State, northeastern New Jersey and southwestern Connecticut meet. New York Citys metropolitan area is a maze of overlapping political units and varied communities. Within it are Central cities that share many of the problems of New York itself such as Newark and Yonkers. Most of the metropolitan area consists of middle -income suburbs whose residents commute to work in the city or in other commercial and industrial centers.

Climate:

New York City has a temperate climate. Winters are cold and damp. In January, the coldest month, the mean temperature is almost 0 degree C. In summer, it is warm and humid. In July, the hottest month the average temperature is 25 degree C. However there are frequent periods of clear dry weather in all seasons. On the average, the annual snowfall totals to 29 inches."

Population & Religion:

New York City has a population of 7.35 million in 1990. In the present decade, there is a tendency for slower growth rate due to the global awareness and awake ness towards population problems. It is found that even in China, which tops the world population list the growth rate has reduced remarkably due to social awareness and education. Roman Catholics make up 40 % of the

population and Jews about 15 %.The other sects of the world religion constitute the balance percentage.

Natural Resources:

Huge forests are the natures gift for New York State. Broad rivers like Hudson River is flowing across the state through out the year and make the land very fertile. Iron and steel industry is flourishing due to their availability in mines. Stones and gems are also cut from mines.

Agriculture:

The surface soil is composed of sand and clay deposits left by the glaciers of Ice Age. Early in 19th century, the majority of New Yorkers were engaged in agriculture. Wheat brought more income in 1850s when dairying took the lead. Still New York State is a leading producer of farm products. Almost three fifths of agricultural income is derived from production of milk and cream. A wide variety of vegetables, potatoes and onions are the most important raise in New York State. Apples and grapes are the chief fruit crops. Lumbering industry is also existing. Principal hard woods like oak, birch, beech and maple are cut for making furniture and other household products."

Industries:

New Yorks good transportation linked it well with the markets of both American interior and Europe. Its own local market, abundant supply of labor and its capital encourage growth of manufacturing industries like machinery, metal processing, Iron and steel, electrical and electronic products pulp and paper products and the like. After Civil War, the clothing industry led to a great expansion. New York City is famous for its apparel and printing & publishing industry. Huge aircraft and instrument plants are located around New York City. Many factories making business machines and shoes are located in New York City.

Places of interest:

First and foremost is the Statue of Liberty which stands in Liberty Islands welcoming millions of immigrants. New York is famous for its skyscrapers. The Niagara Falls is another tourist attraction. New York has top ranked museums. National and state parks, Historic site and monuments are many to be seen and enjoyed. Rock feller Center, New York Zoological Park, Botanical Garden, and Staten Island Ferry are some of the places of interest. Not only the tourists and also the citizens of America visit these places along with their families and children on holidays.

Conclusion:

New York is able to command the loyalty of most of its inhabitants. It is widely felt that New York is already too large, its bureaucracy too cumbersome to cope with the citys own problems. Still for millions, the New York is the quintessential city.
