New London ct Connecticut
is one of the original thirteen states of the USA and
a basic state of New England. It is one of the smallest
states and covers only 5018 square kilometers. It is
densely populated and is one of the richest states of
America. Standard earning of a person of this state
exceeds to that of others states. Its capital is Hartford.
People of Connecticut largely depend on agriculture, animal husbandry, energy, forestry, fishing, manufacturing, mining, tourism and transportation. Farming, however, is not very important and is localized in the river basin. Fisheries exist but it also does not have any say in the financial growth of the state. Fishing has several problems like presence of harbor and water contamination. However about 4100 metric tons of sea food is produced annually. Forests also don’t produce good quality wood so the development of wood based manufacturing units is difficult to survive in the state. Mines and Minerals are also there but they produce just enough for their own consumption. On the contrary, Animal Husbandry is very important. Beef, chicken, eggs and milk products are produced in a large quantity and fruits, flowers, vegetables etcetera are the back bone of farm income. Long tidal waves help in energy production (in fact the word Connecticut means the place of tidal rivers in Algonquian language). The most important economic activities of Connecticut are its manufacturing units and approximately one-fifth of the working class people are engaged in aircraft, helicopter and ship building industries. Connecticut State has eight counties: Fairfield, Hartford, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, Tolland, Windham and Litchfield. However in 1960 itself county government was done away with. In 1966, New London ct was created. This was named after London and stretched over 1725 square kilometers. This was among the primary states of Connecticut who were named after places of the United Kingdom. In 1990 the population of the county was 254,957 and it was estimated 250,735 in 1996. New London County is upland area. It is well irrigated and has dense forest. It has several rivers like the Shetucket and the Quinebang Rivers which are tributaries of the Thames River. The County has a number of small lakes like Pachaug pond and Gardner and Roger lakes. Besides rivers and lakes there are big recreational areas like Bluff Point, Coastal Reserve, and Rocky Neck and Selden Neck parks. It has also state forests like Pachaug and Nehantic States forests. There are a number of towns in this county. These include: Baltic, Bozrah, Colchester, East Lyme, Franklin, Gales Ferry, Griswold, Groton, Hanover, New London, Sprague, Stonington, Taft Ville, Uncasville, Versailles, Voluntown, Waterford, Yantic and so on. It is interesting to note that there is both a city as well as a county in the name of New London ct. The city has been developed as an industrial city, a summer resort and a deepwater port. As far as population of the city is concerned, it has remained static over the years. For education there is both a senior and a junior college. The city has a US Navy Submarine base and the Naval Underwater Systems Center. There is a Naval Research Center also. Major industrial products of the town are Submarines, Pharmaceuticals, Printed Materials and Chemicals. US Coast Guard Academy which is located here was established in 1876 in 36 hectares of land and is about 2.4 kilometers north of New London ct. Submarine base started working during the First World War. London Town has several interesting sites. Those who want to retreat in nature can visit its parks and beaches. These are the primary pulls of the county. Beaches are important tourist centers and New London ct has many of these. Waterford Beach and American Wharf Marina are important beaches. There are also a number of parks. Connecticut College Arboretum is a 750 acre forest and meadow landscape. Besides that New London Waterfront Park is an exciting park which opens up the city to the Thames River. Those who want to peep into the past and learn about the legacy can visit historical homes and churches. Fort Trumbull State Park has a granite fort of the mid 19th century which exhibits military history. Two Hempstead Houses of 1678 and 1759 are also historical monuments. One was built from wood and the other from stone. Besides these past monuments, Robert Mill US Custom House is America’s oldest continuously operating custom House. Shaw Perkins Mansion also exists from the mid 18th century. Besides these there are several famous places in the city. Garde Arts Center was built in 1926. It is a Vaudeville and movie theater. The center encompasses a number of contiguous buildings which regularly presents concerts, dance performances and theater shows. There is also a new London Ledge light. It was built in 1909 to protect ships from nearby rock ledges and the shoals on which it sits. It was automated in 1987. It is believed that this light house is haunted by one of its former keepers who had committed suicide after learning about his wife’s unfaithfulness. Nightlife of New London ct is also very interesting. One can completely relax and enjoy after a day’s sweat. There are quite a lot of restaurants, bars, clubs, live music venues and hot dancing spots. There is a `Club251’. Here every Friday and Saturday DJ does perform. The club also accommodates gay and lesbian customers. Another club `ClubH20’ is a dance club. It offers discounts to college students on every Thursday and to women on every Friday. On every Saturday they change party theme. New London County has several good quality hotels, motels, inns and restaurants. It has been a summer resort and a tourist center right from the beginning. Tourism till this day is a major industry in New London and it contributes in the economy of the region in a big way. Besides beaches, museums and golf courses there are several world class casinos, waterfalls and places for skiing.
