Auto Rental France

As is the case with most other beautiful places in the world, to hit the road is the best way to explore and enjoy France. The country has nearly 40,000km of excellent national highways. About 9600 km of them called ‘auto routes’ are four-lane superhighways, enabling you to best utilize your auto rental France touring less visited areas of France. A number of these superhighways are toll roads known as ‘auto routes a peage’, with ‘peage’ meaning ‘pay.’ For your information, the toll is not high enough to cause you great worries; rather, you save a lot on gas and time by paying little. The network of secondary national highways is also excellent. All of them become jammed in July/August and August/September when people make a mad rush for their favorite vacation spots.

You should consider a few things that might help you when going for auto rental France. If you have just one travel companion, choose a smaller car because though the highways are wide, there are some narrow roads in some villages. It will be easier for you to park the car and most important, you can save on expensive gas. However, if there are four of you, you can’t do without a bigger vehicle. Many gas stations in large cities stay open for 24 hours. Average gasoline price is US$5 per gallon though it might cost a little more at gas stations on any highway.

Before renting an auto in France, you should be aware of certain rules and regulations as well as some helpful information.

Age limits

To be eligible to rent a car, you must be at least 21 years of age (it may vary with car category) and have held your license for one year. Under-25 drivers may have to pay a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts are mandatory and children must be at least 10 years old to sit in the front seat. Child seats are mandatory for children aged 3 and below.

Road rules

In France, speed limits are 50kph in cities, 110kph on open roads, and 130kph on highways. Traffic travels on the right and it is a convention to yield to drivers approaching from the right. If you violate traffic rules, you are fined on the spot.

Restrictions

Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia do not allow autos rented in France into their countries. Italy also does not allow some luxury cars.

One-way rentals

Barring Biarritz and the Isle of Corsica, domestic one-way auto rentals are unrestricted and free of charge within France. Fees are charged for international one-way car rentals and not all vehicles are allowed.

Parking zones

In many small French towns you will find pay parking meters. Larger cities mostly have ''blue zones'' where you display a parking disc or ticket on the dashboard of your car when you park. You can collect these discs from police stations and tourist offices.

Road map

The most helpful map to consult when traveling is without any doubt the Michelin "France Tourist & Motoring Atlas." It covers France (and some additional pages for Corsica) and includes 75 town plans, with 39,700 place names in the index and a detailed map of the Paris area. For frequent consultation, it is not a bad idea to take another map showing all of France on one single page.

Auto rental insurance

As auto rental insurance varies widely across Europe, it is wise to review some information prior to booking your vehicle. You should remember that the country where you rent the car would be in effect for the duration of your rental.

In most cases, auto rental france rates include fire and third party liability insurance and inclusive rates also provide collision and theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. It is your discretion whether you accept collision and theft coverage or not.

If you are keen on taking advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, you should contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation is normally printed on your confirmation voucher.

For auto rentals commencing in France, the following guidelines are usually applied.

Mandatory coverage

For auto rentals in France, fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. With third party liability insurance, you get unlimited coverage in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car.
