New York Giants

Previously situated in San Francisco the Giants are a League Baseball team. Generally Giants have head with the West Division of the National league. In their early days, the Giants were the IInd baseball club invented by John B. Day and Jim Mutrie. Originally called the Gothams, they started playing the National league with their other teams mates the Mets while playing for the American Association. Though the Mets were extremely successful club, however the New York Giants won their first National League in 1888. The Giant’s home grounds are the Polo Grounds and with the movement of these grounds uptown to 155th Street and 8th Avenue the Giants also traveled and remained in the New York City.

Giants started their career with some disastrous matches in 1902 when John Mc Grow was signed as the New York Giants manager. Under the management of John the New York Giants have ten national League permanent and three World Series championships. The first most victory of Giants managed by John was Modern World Series chance in which they defeated Boston Americans in 1904.

The later parts of the year saw the scandals of New York Giants as bribing the umpire Bill Klem. However, with time, the scandal went by. Throughout 1910s the Giants received some hard luck getting defeated in 3 Straight World Series to the A’s, the Red Sox, and the A’s again. Giants won over the Yankees in the first 2 matches, however again lost to them in 1923. Giants also lost in 1924 defeated by Washington Senators winning their only World Series in their history.

1930-1960

In the year 1932, John handed over the team to Bill Terry. Terry presided over the team for 10 years with the history of winning 3 pennants and 1 World Series. Other major players of the year were Fernando, Carl Hubbell, Lou Gehrig, Valenzuela Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Al Simmons, Joe Cronin.

Leo Durocher managed the team in 1948. But due to some controversy he could not become manager for the team and remained in helm till 1955 the years that became unforgettable for the Giants fans.

The name Shot Heard Round the World was name given to Bobby Thomson’s walk-off home run that gained the National League pennant for the Giants over the rival the Brooklyn Dodgers. Under Durocher’s mentorship the Giants evolved to tie Dodgers for the lead of the last day of the season.

Another main event of 1954 was the World Series in which Willie Mays made the catch that turned out to be a dramatic catch off a line drive by Vic Wertz. They brought home this World Series.

They tripped to 3rd position the year after the World Series win. The year witnessed Horace Stoneham entering into negotiations with San Francisco mayor George Christopher. In the same year Dodger’s owner Walter O’Malley courted the city of Los Angles. In the summer of 1957, both the teams made an announcement for moving toward West thus ending the golden era of the New York.

1960-1980

In 1962, Whitney Payson founded New York Mets and bought National League baseball back to the city. In 1962, the Giants again were defeated by Yankees. The match summary was the Giants lost 4 games to 3 to the Yankees, also losing the last game in the bottom of the 9th 1-0 in a pitchers duel. Although the Giants did not win any World Series till 1989, the Giants of the 60’s continued to be permanent contenders with many of its players such as Gaylord Perry, John Marichal, McCovey, and Mays.

The Giant’s next experience came out in 1971 when they bought victory to the division by defeating the League Championship Series by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Roberto Clemente. The rest of the 1970s was a generally disappointing decade for the Giants with slipping to the third place in the rest of the season.

1980- 2000

A Black manager was appointed by the Giants in the year 1981. His name was Frank Robinson who only held the managerial responsibility for four years. The year 1985 witnessed Giants losing 100games and as a result Al Rosen was hired a manager. During his tenure several players became stars in the game such as Rick Reuschgel, Robby Thompson, Will Clark, Dave Dravecky, Kevin, Mitchell, Candy Maldonado, and. Next manager to mange the Giants was Roger Craig who managed the team from 1985-1992.

In 1986, under the management of Roger, the giants won 83 games and won National League Western Division title in 1987.

The Giants beat the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series four games to one.

The year 1992 witnessed the owner Bob Lurie saved franchise from moving to Toronto and put the team for sale. St. Petersburg led by Vince Naimoli reached an agreement to buy the team and move across the country. Magowan signed superstar free agent Barry Bonds shaping the franchise’s fortunes for more than a decade. Barry Bonds era saw the great numbers for MVP namely as: 46 homers, 129 runs, 123 RBI, 336/458/677/1.135. Dusty Baker managed the team in 1992.

The period 1994 to 1996 were not very popular years for them. In the years 1995 and 1996 Giants did not get any position. The bad times provoked the Giants to announce Brian Sabean as their next General Manager. In the Williams trade Brian acquired Jeff Kent, Jose Vizcanio, Julian tavarez and Joe Roa. This led the Giants to win the first NL West division title of 1997.

2000s

The year 2000 witnessed the Giants to open their privately owned ballpark, Pacific bell p-ark at Candlestick Point. In 2001, the Giants were eliminated from playoff connection to the second to last.

The year witnessed the Giants as being able to maintain their first place just 9th team to do so in the baseball history.

The year 2005 season was the team’s least successful since moving to its new stadium. The team in this year saw the players entering into the team such as Brad Hennessy, Matt Cain, Matt Cain, Noah Lowry, Jeremy Accardo including the first baseman Lance Niekro and outfielders Ason Ellision and Todd Linden.

A celebration for the Baseball Hall of fame Juan Marichal happened on May 25, 2005. In the two games following the ceremonies a uniform was worn by Giants having the words Giants on the front.

On July 14 2005, the franchise won their 10,000th match defeating their long time rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3 thereby becoming the first team to have five digits in their winning total.

On September 28, 2005, the Giants were officially discarded from the NL West race after losing to the 2005 champion San Diego Padres. The team finished third with a record of 75-87, and turned out to be the worst season.
