New York Mets is a League Baseball team. It is situated in Flushing, New York. The team is in the Eastern Division of the National league. Let us take a look at the major happenings of their history. Franchise History The year 1957 saw two major baseball teams leaving New York for California. These teams were Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. Thus, it left the US without a major National League Franchise. On July 27, 1959, the attorney William Shea announced the formation of a major baseball league called the Continental league. After one year it was decided that the new league would be abandoned and 4 new franchisers would be created. Shea and other Continental league organizers reached this decision. It was decided that each league would be having two of the newly created leagues. There would be one National League team in New York, which would be owned by John Payson and her husband Charles Shipman Payson. When started, the league of New York was planned to get many names such as Sky liners, Continentals, Burros , Jets, and Bees. The owners selected the name of their league as the Metropolitans that was later shortened to Mets. The beginning of the New York Mets was not that of great type. They lost their first 9 games in 1962 to 40-120 record. This was the third worst percentage that any team had since 20th century. The year 1964 saw Mets playing their first two matches at the Polo Grounds. Later they were moved to Shea stadium. The first season of the New York Mets ended on a high note of their own as a team of 1969 called the Amazing Mets or Miracle Mets. 1970s The major happenings of the era of 1970 were Mets first ever win of the NL East, with a finishing of only 3 above .500. They also won the Oakland A’s to 7 games. However they lost to Wayne Garrett’s infield pop fly. The 1970 era saw some of the most wonderful players in the New York Mets team such as John Stearns, Dave Kingman, Craig Swan, and Lee Mazzilli. 1980s The years of 1980s again saw some of the most wonderful players in the site of Mets such as Dwight Gooden who was fireballing right-handed pitcher, Darryl Strawberry who was a lanky power-hitting right fielder, Gary Carter who was the co-captain of the team, and Keith Hernandez who was a slick fielding baseman and also the co-captain. In the years the Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in 1986 and captured the World Series seven game. In the game 6, the Mets were only two outs. From there they came back from two runs down to defeat Boston with 6-5. Their last run was scored by Mookie Wilson that also hit the legs of the Boston’s team first baseman Bill Buckner. Despite this famous win, the rest of the era of 1980s saw mixed season by the Mets. The team in 1986 was very strong though hit by a major controversy. The two major players called the Strawberry and Gooden had some personal problems that continued till the year 2005. Their problems started before the age of 25. Hernandez' also had some problem and Lenny Dykstra got into a controversy of being on the steroid and gambling. Soon this led to Mets falling apart. The most famous player of the Mets team till date is Darryl Strawberry who remains Mets all time leaders. This era witnessed the Mets losing the games in 1987 and 1988 though they won the Division. They won their second hundred win season in three years. They beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS season but were later defeated by them in seven games. 1993 Story The year of 1993 was a year of rebuilding. The Mets started to rebuild their superstars despite their personal problems. They bought the famous Eddie Murray who was a Hall of Fame. They bought him for $3 million. Other player who was bought during this era were Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Bobby Bonilla for more than $6 million, Vince Coleman for over $2 million who was onetime record setting base stealer, Bret Saberhagen for over $3 million who was a one time World Series hero, and Frank Tanana for $1.5 million who was a veteran pitcher. However this plan of rebuilding the players did not prove successful as majority of the players such as Saberhagen and Coleman got injured and spent of their time in hospitals rather than on fields. In the year 1992 alone the Mets lost at least 103 games. The Other 1990s Years The year 1997 saw the Mets being able to rejuvenate. The major player who became start during this season was Todd Hundley the switch hitter catcher. He broke several records this year and reached the superstardom. The Mets improved by 17 games since 1996 though winning only four games. This year also saw Hundley being faced by a major elbow injury making it imperative for the Mets to have a catcher. The Dodgres during this era were involved in trading Mik Pizza rather than paying his exorbitant salary. The Mets got Pizza in trade for Peter Wilson. The Mets played well during this era but missed 1998 post season games. In 1998, the Mets defeated Arizona Diamondbacks. However they lost to Atlanta Braves in 6 games. 2000s The year 2000 started with Mets defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, thus winning their 4th NL championship. They also defeated in the Subway Series in the World Series 2000, the Yankees. They scored only 3 fewer runs than Yankees. The era of 2000s saw the performance of some poor players such as Jeromy Burnitz, Roberto Alomar, Roger Cedeño, and Mo Vaughn. As a result of this the General Manager Steve Phillips was fired in 2003. The Mets record in 2003 was among the worst a team can have in baseball. In the year 2004, Omar Minaya was appointed as the General Manager. This general manager appointed some of the players that later went on to become stars in the Mets team such as Mo Vaughn, Pedro Martínez, and Carlos Beltrán. He also appointed the coach Willie Randolph as the new manager. This made him the first black MLB manager in Mets history. Minaya also tried other things for making the team of Mets better such as exchange of major players Florida Marlins, Carlos Delgado, and Paul Lo Duca. Thus, Minaya made sincere attempts to rebuild the team effectively. Some of the Quick facts Current Uniform colors: Black, Orange, Blue.
