New York Jets

New York Jets began to play in 1960s and were initially known as the Titans. The club was named the New York Jets when Sonny Werblin purchased the team in 1963. The major distinction achieved by the New York Jets was their first ever defeat NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game in which they defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

A Brief Franchise History

» Began as the Titans of New York a charter member of the American Football League in 1960

» The name Giants was meant for play on Giants, New York’s very successful NFL franchise

» Played home games in the famous grounds of Polo

» Did not draw any spectators

» After 1962, Titans finished 5-9 and there was a question on its credibility

» Sonny Werblin and Leon Hess bought the team from Harry Wismer in 1963.

» The team’s color changed from blue and gold to green and white.

» The team hired a coach Weeb Ewbank who had won back-to-back NFL championships from Baltimore Colts.

Years 1965- 1969

» 1965 witnessed a signing of University of Alabama quarterback Joe Namath

» University of Alabama quarterback Joe Namath signed with Jets over the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that held his NFL rights

» Namath’s salary was $427,000 annually and the contract was for a period of few months.

» The Jets became quite popular during 1960s. They drew spectators both from home and on road

» The period witnessed a merger of AFL with the NFL, to finally be consummated in 1970

» 1967 witnessed Namath leading a victory of Jets in an 8–5–1 record

» Namath attained a milestone by passing for 4,007 yards in 1967

» 1968 witnessed the Jets reaching a pinnacle of their existence

» 1969 Jets rose up to the top of the AFL and represented the League in the Super Bowl

» 1969 also witnessed Baltimore Colts being pitted against the Jets

» The same year witnessed the Jets creating the history by defeating the Colts 16-7

» The Jets first ever game was Monday Night Football game, a 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns

» The period also witnessed notorious TV networks incidents in Television history. It was on November 17, 1968 just before 7 pm the Jets scored a late to take a 32-29 lead over the Oakland Raiders with 1:05 left. NBC displayed to a commercial and showed the movie Heidi. The fans everywhere attacked the New York with phone calls demanding the game be restored. Though the network decided to restore the game but decision could not be communicated resulting in movie starting on schedule.

» The year 1969 witnessed a tremendous season winning the AFL’s Eastern Division with a record of 10-4.

» The Jets lost to Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional playoffs

The Years of 1970s and 1980s

» The Jets did not reach up to expectations after the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.

» Joe Namath fractured his wrist in October and was not able to play for the rest of the season, with the Jets finishing 4–10

» Namath also got injured in the 1971 and the season submarined the Jets

» Namath came back in 1972 with a respectable win of the Jets by 7-7

» In 1973 the coach Weeb Ewbank retired

» Charley Winner became the coach of the Jets in 1974

» In 1975, the Jets would finish only 3–11 and the year also witnessed the appointment of Lou Holtz who was the coach of North Carolina State University

» Holtz did not win any special matches leading Jets to 3-13 games only

» Namths career disappointed the Jets throughout 1970s. He missed 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973 matches due to various injuries in knees. After a horrible 1976 year in which Namath only passed 4 touchdown passes against 16 interceptions in 11 games, Namath was branded by the Jets to the Los Angeles Rams. Namath announced his retirement the same year.

» In 1977, Walt Michaels was hired who stayed for six years

» The year 1981 was the Jets' first winning season since joining the NFL. The Jets finished 10–5–1 and make the playoffs passing and 25 touchdowns, most of them to Wesley Walker and Jerome Barkum

» One of the Jets' bright blemishes for the 1981 season was their defensive line. Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko chaired the New York Sack Exchange and combined for more than 40 sacks by 1981. The line also showed Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam

» In a strike-shortened 1982 season, the Jets finished 6–3 defeating the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Raiders

» Joe Walton became the new coach for the 1983 season, and he led the team to a 7–9 season. In the same year the Jets witnessed entering into new deal which was unfavorable to Jets including condition such as Jets would not be able to play a home game at Shea Stadium until the Mets' season was over

» In 1983 the Jets concluded an agreement with the New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority for playing at their home games at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey starting in 1984

» In 1984, their first year at their new home, draft pick Ken O'Brien took over at quarterback; but the team broke to a 7–9 record

» The Jets improved on that mark for the 1986 season. The team won 9 straight games to start the season at 10–1

» In 1987, the Jets again tripped through December, but this time they lacked the playoffs with a 6–9 record

The Years 1990s

» In 1991, with Brad Baxter having a career-high 11 touchdown receptions, the Jets tried to improve to 8–8, winning the year finale against the Miami Dolphins on the final weekend of the season

» The same year was witnessed the near-tragedy. In November defensive lineman Dennis Byrd was temporarily paralyzed when fighting with team mate Scott Mersreau in a home game against Kansas City. Thanks to the steroid treatment, Byrd was able to walk again in a matter of months

» After the 1992 season longtime Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason joined the team for the 1993 season

» The year 1994 season Jets started the season 6–5 and played Miami in November. The Jets won a number of enjoyable games, including a dramatic home overtime win against the Denver Broncos

» Kotite a former Jets assistant proved to be a worse player. Kotite finished his NFL head coaching career with a 4–35 record in his final 39 games

» Bill Parcells became the coach of the Jets in the year of 1996. Parcells very impressive profile paid immediate dividends. The Jets won 10 of their last 11 games and completed the season 12–4, setting a team record for wins in a season

» Bill Belichick resigned just after one day on the job

» Parcells gave promotion to longtime assistant Al Groh from linebacker coach to head coach for the 2000 season

Years 2000 to Present

» The Jets were bad through the 2001 season in a very competitive AFC East. Testaverde was seated out early in the season with the team at 1-4, and replaced with Chad Pennington. The final-week win over the Green Bay Packers, combined with the Patriots winning the Dolphins, gave them the AFC East title at 9-7

» Several player left New York Jets to free agency in the off-season, more to the Washington Redskins. In addition, a pre-season injury to Pennington adversely affected the Jets throughout 2003

» Pennington gained health again for the start of the 2004 season, and the Jets launched the season 5-0 before losing 2 of their next 3

» The 2005 season began with the Jets again acquiring Laveranues Coles from the Washington Redskins and gaining CB Ty Law from the New England Patriots. The year also witnessed several matches with the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, and the New England Patriots. The year also witnessed several injuries of the major players

» The New York Jets won against the Oakland Raiders 26-10 on December 11, 2005. This victory cracked their seven-game losing streak

» The Jets lost to their division rival Miami Dolphins the next week, on December 18

» The Jets closed out the season by beating the Buffalo Bills 30-26

» They ended the year with a 4-12 record

» The Jets will have the 4th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft
