Based in the Bronx, New York City, the New York Yankees have been the most talked about team in the more than 100 years old history of American sports. The team is one of the two major league franchisee operating in the New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National league. Out of the 39 series it has appeared in, the team has won 26 World Series, with a tie between the St. Louis Cardinals, and Oakland Athletics for the second rank with 9 World Series victories coming in each one’s lap. The Yankees also proudly boasts of being the only team to be represented at every position in the baseball hall of fame. Baseball hall of fame is a semi-official stadium, serving as the one point stop for all the information, display of baseball related artifacts, details on the players who have excelled in this field, and history of baseball in the United States. The origin of the famous baseball club: The history of the New York Yankees roots back to the end of 1900 baseball season, when the American league, previously known as the western league, reorganized under the presidency of Ben Johnson. Due to the political connections of the owners of the National league “New York Giants”, with the Tammany hall, the team efforts were stymied. The team had a fresh start in 1901, as Baltimore Orioles, under the management of John McGraw. Due to feud with Ben Johnson, John McGraw subsequently jumped league to manage the New York giants. The team’s re-origination began in 1902, with the establishment of the franchise’s first park in the New York City at 165th St. and Broadway in Manhattan. Consequently, the team slowly became popular as the “New York Highlanders”, with the park being near to the highest point on the island. As highlanders, the team was not able to enjoy much success, with getting only two wins in their kitty. The only significant victory they achieved was on the last day of the 1904 season, which subsequently led the “New York Giants” announce that they would not play against any minor league. The relationship between the two warmed up around the period of 1913 to 1922, when the team was allowed to play in the polo ground, owned by their rival team “The Giants”. During this time of early 1900’s, was the nickname “Yankees”, occasionally applied to the team, in order to disparate them as Americans. The name “Highlanders” became obsolete, with the growing popularity of the team’s nickname as “Yankees, with the New York herald, quoting the teams victory over Boston in 1904 as “Yankees win opening game from Boston, 2-1”. Not much later, the name “New York Yankees” bored the designation of the official nickname for the team. During the period of 1930’s, the Yankees achieved new heights of success under the guidance of Joe McCarthy. This era in the history of the team can also be called as the “McCarthy era”. During this stretch of time, while the team was enjoying phenomenal success, the only strongest competitors, they had around were the “Detroit Tigers”. The team saw heights of success and downfalls, accompanied by controversies and popularities until 1974, when George Stein Brenner purchased the club for $ 10 millions. During the stretch of 1998-2000, Yankees were the first team to “three-peat” with the World Series victories, since the time of their victory against the Oakland Athletics of the early 1970s. In 1998, the team was acknowledged to be one of the greatest team in the history of baseball, and created many world records to prove their title of being the greatest team in the World. In September 2005, the club set a new record of 4,090,696 audience being witness to the American home league, that too in a regular season. The controversies surrounding the team: The Yankees are supposedly world’s highest salaried paid team, as compared to any other franchise in baseball. How fair is the Yankee’s free spending is a debated issue, with heated controversies and arguments coming up, for and against these spending practices. The supporters, rules out the controversies as baseless, and defends the team with following arguments” • New York, being the largest market, with highest earned revenues, should spend and invest in accordance with its vast resources. • The merchandise sale, TV revenues, earned by the Yankees attendance, helps to a great extent in subsidizing the less profitable teams. • In a free society, no one could be restricted from spending, whatever he/she wants to spend. • In absence of a local favorite in the country, the team gives the baseball fans, someone to root for. The arguments raised against the spending practices of the Yankees are: • Allowing a single team to make such bids for the best talent in baseball makes competition tough for the lower-spending teams. • The premium prices paid by the Yankees for the top talent, encourages the players and their agents to quote unjustifiable and unreasonably high prices.
