The wearing of a necklace has very ancient roots. The Greeks and Romans wore
ropes of pearl necklaces. The oldest examples discovered are about
75000 years old, where pea-sized pierced shell beads strung into
a necklace were found in a cave of Soth Africa. A necklace is generally
an article of jewellery which is worn around the neck and lies flat
to the body rather than hanging freely. Necklace was beter known
as collar in the earlier days. Queen Alexandra of Denmark
introduced the style and, she wore it to hide a scar on her neck.
The livery collars or chains of office was worn by officers of state
in England and the United Kingdom, and the chains were also worn
with various Orders of Knighthood. A torc, is a rigid circular necklace
that is open-ended at the front. Torcs were worn by people from
the Bronze Age. Torcs were made from intertwined metal strands,
usually made of gold or bronze.
Necklaces may be in different forms, made of gold, silver, diamond or pearl, it may be a metal chain, it may also be manufactured with cloth, and it sometimes contain gems, rocks, wood or shells. Necklaces are often attached to a pendant. Many Christians wear a cross or crucifix pendant which may differ in shape, size, material and color. Others wear the cross pendant merely out of style or decoration and may not be a Christian. When a necklace is worn high on the neck it is referred to as a choker. This type of jewellery consisits of one or more bands and encircles the neck and is about 14 to 16 inches long. Madam Loisel hesitated to attend the party since she didnt want to look poor in the middle of a lot of rich women. Later on she decides to borrow a necklace from her friend, Madam Forestier, and attends the party. Distressingly, that evening Madame Loisel somehow loses the necklace. Unable to bear the shame Madam Loisel and Monsieur decides that they will purchase an identical diamond necklace as a replacement and give it to Madam Forestier. They did not inform Madame Forestier of the change and spent the next ten years of their lives paying off the debts from the new necklace, which costs them thirty-six thousand francs. They both took on extra job and spent their lives in abject poverty. After ten years when Madam Loisel was able to tell her friend of the change, she was shocked to hear this and informed that the necklace was in fact,a mere imitation and not real diamonds.
