Dallas and Fort Worth are two of the biggest cities of
North Texas. Even though the two cities are around 25 miles or so
apart, they are often referred to as Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex
or simply DFW. This Metroplex covers the metropolitan divisions
of Dallas-Plano-Irving-Fort Worth and
Arlington and is one of the largest Metroplex in the United States.
Marked by Dallas in the east and Fort Worth in the west, the DFW
covers 12 counties, claiming over 120 cities in Texas.

in 2005). It is the largest market in the Southern U.S. and ninth
largest in the nation. Between 2000 and 2030, its
population is expected to grow by 2.7 million people to almost
8 million. Dallas-Fort worth has a large working-age population.
According to Census 2000, the median age of the Metroplex is 32.1
while the national age is 35.3.

Location & Climate:
The DFW is located in North Central Texas, about 250 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. It is near the headwaters of the Trinity River and the hills in the area range from 500 - 800 feet in elevation.
The climate is humid subtropical. But often the hot, dry winds from the north and west make the summers hot. Summer daytime temperatures frequently exceed 100F. The hottest months are June, July and August. Between these hot spells, DFW experiences thunderstorms, making the weather volatile in nature.
DFW receives approximately 31.5 inches of rain per year. Precipitation is mainly a result of thunderstorms, most frequent in the spring. Snowfall is rare (averaging 2.5 inches annually). Winters are mild. Northers occur about three times each month, and cause sudden drops in temperature. But these periods of extreme cold are short-lived. January is usually the coldest month and May the rainiest.
Economy:
Dallas along with its suburbs has the highest concentrates of corporate headquarters in the US. It has the largest base of Information Technology in the state. Also 22 Fortune-500 companies are based in the Metroplex. Some of them are Exxon Mobil (# 1), AMR, Electronic Data Systems, J.C. Penny, Kimberly-Clark etc. American Airlines is the biggest employer in the region.
With 28% of the states labor force, the worlds largest wholesale trading complex The Dallas Market Center, lies in the Metroplex. On the other end, Fort Worth, known as the Cowtown , is the center for farming, ranching and oil industries.
