Just as the Cactus develop spines as a means of protection, the deer has adapted itself to a wide number of habitats .These adapt themselves to Savanna and the Sage communities.

The deer adapted to the Savanna have large antlers in proportion to their body size. These also have a large tail which is also a mean of adaptation .There is a difference in the size of the male and female deer. While the male deer is large and weighs about sixty to hundred kilos ,some deers also weigh one hundred and sixty kilos.The female deer, called doe ,weighs forty to fifty kilos ,while some rare ones weighs seventy to eighty kilos.The coat of the deer is reddish brown in the spring or summer and turns to grey brown during autumn and the winter. Males of about a year in age develop antlers.Antlers begin to grow in early spring and vascularises skin starts appearing from the area of the antlers . The deer can be identified by a peculiar white underside to its tail which shows a signal of alarm by raising the tail to escape.The male deer is called a buck .Bucks shed their antlers

when the females have bred . Females give birth to one ,two or three offsprings in their lifespan.The youngsters of the deer are called fawns.Fawns have spots during their early age and shed their spots during their first summer and weigh twenty to thirty five kilos by the first winter.Male fawns are bulkier than the female fawns.

The deer contribute a lot to the fauna of the region . Recently practices like gunning, unregulated hunting ,deforestation prove detrimental to the growth of spreading population of deer in the US.In the early nineteenth century the population of the deer was about three lakh ,but after the hunters got after the deers ,their population reduced eventually. Then the country planned conservation programs and special events to save the deer population.The deer hunting was even declared illegal .So these policies lead to a tremendous increase in the population of this animal .Recent estimates have put the deer populace beyond thirty million mark.In some areas the deer population has risen like cats and dogs .The deer often collide with the local vehicles and are often the cause of serious accidents and injuries .The night time driving is a risk due to the burdensome increase in the number of deer population in the United States of America.
