Texas Saltwater Fishing

Texas has a world class salt water fishery. Salt Water Fishing in Texas is as good as anywhere along the US coastline. The anglers of Texas never miss an opportunity to pack their bags and rods to take advantage of the Lone Star State's world-class saltwater fishery. Texas has over 300 miles of coastline bordering the Gulf of Mexico where fishing is done.

There were tiny fishing villages in Texas since; the region was a colony of Mexico. Other than fishing towns they have become places of tourist attraction, taking advantage of their rich history and seaside location.

The purpose of salt water fishing varies from subsistence and science to commercial and recreational. Depending on the type of fish, saltwater fishing can be done from a boat or onshore. There are different types of salt water fishing in Texas, which includes blue marlin, black sea bass, speckled blue marlin, black sea bass, speckled trout, sand perch, red snapper, scamp, swordfish, tarpon, flounder, spotted sea trout, Florida pompano, yellow fin tuna, redfish, leatherjacket, dog snapper, and barracuda. A variety of techniques are used in salt water fishing. Saltwater tackle requires special materials. The metal parts on saltwater tackle are made of nickel chrome or stainless steel. Reels are generally needed for larger fish and to fish in deep water. There are four basic types of rods and reels used for salt water fishing. The spin cast, spinning, baitcast, and fly. Spin casting is great for beginners as the reel is mounted on top of the rod's handle for easy control. In baitcasting method, the reel and lines are mounted on top of the handle. Baitcasting is recommended for more advanced anglers since it is a difficult skill to master. With a fly, the reel is only used to store the line and the angler casts the line that carries the fly; this is the most difficult skill to learn.

Fishing Regions:

Sabine Lake and its surrounding marshes are a very popular location in Texas for fishing trips. Sabine Lake is a 90,000 acre salt water estuary formed by the confluence of the Sabine River and the Neches River. The Lake is located on the Texas border and is the home for speckled trouts, red fish, bluegill, black bass as well as many traditional saltwater species. Galveston Island is another important fishing destination in Texas. Fishes like speckled trout, redfish, and flounder are particularly found in this area. East and West Matagorda bays are full of oyster beds and Texas-size speckled trout and red fish. Rock Port is a cozy coastal village and is famous for large numbers of redfish speckled trout, black drum and flounder. Baffin Bay is renowned for trophy trout. Upper Laguna Madre consists mainly of shallow grass and sand flats, and are perfect for casting of redfish, trout, sheepshead and black drum.

The tiny South Texas town of Port Mansfield has long been a favourite destination for serious saltwater anglers. Fishes like trophy trout and redfish can be chased in scanty inches of water. The narrow, shallow stretch of the Lower Laguna Madre is the southernmost stretch of saltwater in Texas and is famous for speckled trout, redfish, snook, tarpon and mangrove snapper.

Safety Measures:

Some safety measures should be taken while going out for such fishing. The weather conditions should always be checked and insect repellent should always be carried in order to avoid bug bites. The anglers should avoid sun exposure and put on plenty of sunscreen. Before setting sail, angler should always make sure to have an ample amount of personal flotation devices (PFD) on board. He should be aware of the depth of water and how strong the current is and whats the bottom like The angler should always wear long pants and wading boots to protect himself from jelly fish and nettles while wading.

Weather Sturdy:

The study of weather gives an idea of the fish behaviour. The weather is a big factor in determining the number of fishes caught and it also helps to plan in what direction the angler should go. If the wind is going to blow 20 mph out the North it's not time for fishing in the south shore. Warm Fronts are the fish catching fronts. Cloudy weather, dropping barometer, south to west winds are the predominant conditions of the warm fronts. Resident fishes move out from under the heavy cover to the edge and feed. The deep open water fish moves even to the shallows to feed. If the water temperatures are warm these are good days for top water baits.
